At CVA, our curriculum is designed to transform passionate students into disciplined performers through a structured, multi-dimensional approach to Carnatic music.
Our lessons are categorized into three specialized sessions to provide a well-rounded musical education:
Carnatic Vocal (Classical Foundation): Focuses on the fundamental building blocks, including musical notes (Swaras), rhythmic beats (Taala), and singing in varying speeds (Laya). The journey progresses from Sarali Varasais and Alankarams to advanced compositions like Varnams and Keertanams.
Technical Vocal (Versatility & Style): Enhances vocal modulation and repertoire through the study of Vedic Shlokas, Bhajans, and devotional songs. Students also explore Indian Film music influenced by Carnatic traditions, utilizing karaoke tracks to master contemporary delivery.
Theoretical Studies (Cultural Context): Complements practical singing by exploring the history, culture, and specific terminology of the Carnatic tradition.
To master the curriculum, we implement a five-step practice methodology that leverages both ancient tradition and modern resources:
Listen & Watch: Students use our curated video and notation resources to observe how music flows and how the Taalam (rhythm) is executed in harmony with the Shruthi.
Copy & Repeat: Drawing on centuries-old rote learning techniques, students observe and process the nuances of the teacher's performance before replicating them.
Finesse & Embellish: This stage focuses on Gamaka, the essential ornaments like controlled slides and vocal manipulation that define a Raaga's unique identity.
Memorize: Of highest importance in our oral tradition, memorization ensures a student can communicate effectively with an audience during performance.
Perform!: The final stage where training meets the stage.
CVA prepares students for the stage by providing an environment that mimics a professional ensemble:
Accompaniment Integration: We provide various Shruthi scales and Mridangam tracks to help students gain experience singing with accompanying instruments.
Graduated Progression: We recommend perfecting pitch with a Tanpura Shruthi first, then advancing to rhythmic tracks as familiarity with the material grows.
Accredited Success: Students have the opportunity to participate in OCN accredited examinations and perform in external showcases to validate their progress.
